Another question that has arisen surrounding the Yelloweyes is their backstory. The editor cut the words below from the manuscript for various reasons, of which I agreed. The history revealed here will be supplemented by a second part.
When the gods and goddesses left Daupin and returned to the Welkins after fighting what the historians would later name the End of Wars, a new dawn emerged, a period in time where men would decide how days were to be numbered and lived. Out of this new beginning, a great and mighty people rose in an area on the northern coastline of the Great Ocean of Kura and formed a new kingdom named Lescar.
The people of this region became famous throughout the continent for all things considered good. Their capital city attracted people from various lands who were amazed by its extraordinary appearance. Perhaps the most amazing sight was the bright and distinctive yellow eyes of its people.
After many generations, the Lescarians’ arrogance grew and ultimately, through intermarriage and apathy, they lost control of their kingdom. The last insult was choosing a god of the foreigners to be their own.
Nearly all lost the name of the life giving goddess Dasanke they served and worshipped in the beginning from the tips of their tongues. Those still dedicated to the old ways became strangers in their own land.
In place of the golden statues of Dasanke, they erected a wondrous golden wolf with yellow eyes. Darorch was the god of the wild and the statue was a tribute to one of his sons, the great beast Trynt of the North.
When Dasanke had finally seen enough, she came down from the heavens and spoke to her people.
“Why have you done this terrible thing to me?” she said.
Einar, the High Priest of the Oracles of Darorch, spoke to Dasanke in return.
“Darorch has given to us even more than you have given to our people,” he said. “Look at the land and its beauty.”
“Not only does Darorch have no power, but you are also a blind guide.”
“You have always bound us with your laws and commandments because you did not trust us. Darorch trusts his people to do what is right and not for fear of punishment.”
The voice of Dasanke shook the heavens and the continent. Her voice carried over the entire land of Lescar.
“If you do not honor me, do not turn from your worship of Darorch and his worthless wolf Trynt; I will take away the rest of what you have. People of this land will starve and die, and those who survive will burn the dead and the fires will be so great surrounding kingdoms will see the smoke.”
These prophetic words spoken by Dasanke against the people of Lescar became reality, resulting in the death of the beasts of the field and their carcasses covering the land. The birds flew away to find shelter, water, and a place to build their nests. There was mass starvation across the land. Einar and his followers pleaded with Darorch to stop the madness, but he was nowhere to be found.
There was not enough living to bury the dead, so they lit fires to consume the dead bodies and the smoke filled the sky. The nearby kingdoms saw the smoke and knew Lescar had displeased their goddess by their deeds.
Those left alive finally returned to their senses and called for Dasanke to be merciful.
“Please have mercy on us,” they cried out. “Send us to another land where we can at least live as slaves.”
“This one thing I will do for you,” she declared. “I will curse you and you will live. Your bodies will take on the look of the Great Wolf you worshipped. You will be a beast like him, yet you will be neither animal nor human, but something in between. They will call you the Abomination of Yoenia.”
“Please do this and end our suffering.”
“If you attack mankind with vengeance, they will chase you into the forests and caves, forcing you to live off the land. If you can live amongst mankind in peace for a generation, the curse will no longer remain, and your children will return to what you once were.”
“Yes, do this for us so our children might live as mankind does, and they will worship you as we should have.”
Once she finished speaking and returned to the heavens, the remaining people fell to the ground and underwent a chilling transformation. The howls of those changing were so loud, their barking could be heard in the heavens above.
