This book is an epic fantasy novel that combines romance with dark magic, political intrigues, and betrayal. The prologue introduces the reader to the cruelty of Advocate, a king who terrorizes his population. Advocate is threatening to take over the continent by brutal force. But three other kingdoms stand in his way. However, the three kingdoms find it difficult to form an alliance against Advocate because each suffers from internal strife and backstabbing intrigues. Kingdom Rules slows down a bit a couple of times and depicts in detail uncomfortable and complex subjects, including sexual violence and incest. However, the book describes in vivid detail the emotional decisions that the leaders in each kingdom have to make for their personal and the kingdom’s survival.
